Individuality

The shift in fashion!
The shift in interior design?

In our second fashion blog we reported about street style. Instead of looking at the cat-walk for inspiration, modern fashion designers look at what styles are walking the streets. Fashion bloggers profit from making observations on interesting outfits on the streets of major cities. While most of them celebrate the richness and variety of outfits, some have harsh critiques for the fashionistas, who surprise even them with new stylish expressions, criticizing what they consider wrong.

I see it differently and want to encourage you to create your own fashion style, and of course, your own interior style. I do not mean that we should all create new individual looks every season. Rather, I suggest that everyone find what looks and works best for us as individuals. What shapes, what colors? How detailed? How feminine or masculine or even androgynous? Are you more comfortable with with sporty/casual styles or do you like the structure a more formal style gives you? Instead of purchasing outfits that follow the direction of the current fashion (or better of the mainstream garment industry) this is the era of freedom of personal style. The same goes for your interior.

Magazines show one celebrity home after another, but I encourage my clients to create a home that reflects them. True, sometimes it’s fun to see the infinite possibilities of infinite budgets. However, often enough the emptiness of a personal life will peek through the clutter of all that expensive stuff. I am aware that the celebrities, whose home I am presumably looking at, often enough don’t even live in these spaces. And that is exactly it! To LIVE in your own home, YOU have to create your own home. As an interior designer I am happy to help you with that. I ask my clients many questions to find out how they actually live, how they go about their days, when they have a chance to spend time at home. I need to know what meaningful pieces my clients picked up along the ride. Heirlooms? Souvenirs? Presents? Art? Collectibles? I love to work with their “stuff”, rearrange personal pieces, hang art in new groupings, reupholster an inherited chair with a new fabric…in other words bring together meaningful pieces with professional knowledge and a fresh eye. My clients get the chance to rediscover the beauty of their possessions. If that sounds more demanding than just copying the cover of Elle Decor, I can assure you that it is actually a lot of fun and very rewarding. YOU are the center of attention and YOU get to know yourself better. The outcomes are beautiful spaces, one-of-a-kind designs.

Wearing an outfit that fits us well and that reflects us perfectly says so much about us without having to say a word. It also does so much for our confidence! The same goes for our home. Instead of entering someone else’s ideas of interior design, you come back to YOUR home.

P.S. The pictures are from the NY Times T Magazine. I love seeing photos of people in their natural habitats.Top of Form
